This is Unrelated

This is totally unrelated but... why do they have glasses? It just bothers me how this group is 2011 Debating Champions who also happen to be wearing glasses. I read the part where they were Debating Champions from Singapore but why do they happen to all wear glasses?!? And they have that kind of smart(nicer way of saying) vibe. It wouldn't hurt to have one that is good-looking. Not that they should but this picture just feeds and supports the stereotype of Asians are always smart. Or smart people are average looking and wear glasses.
I know this wasn't related but it was a stereotype, that popped into my head, I really couldn't ignore.

  1. Huh. Good point you have here.. :O Well, they probably just don't choose to take the time to "doll themselves up" a little, because I swear if they went and wore contacts and slightly more stylish clothing, they would have less of that "smart(nicer way of saying) vibe".
Of course, it might just be us Americans having a different taste in style? I highly doubt it though.

  2. Ever think about it this way? We always win and look nerdy because thats what our cultures dictate as success. Hence we put little emphasis on looks, hobbies, or anything else that doesn't produce tangible results.
    It's kinda laughable.

Singapore is a very authoritative state. They have produced A LOT of successful debate teams from all formats. Loke Wing Fat coaches and adjudicates is an excellent debate contact in Singapore.
